對日戰爭前，上海就是華語流行音樂發行的重要地區，甚至八年抗戰前後，因為是租借區的關係，所以還是歌照唱、舞照跳、電影照樣演，只是大老闆換日本人當，但依舊用華語來做類似文化拉攏與洗腦的工作。「玫瑰玫瑰我愛你」原名「玫瑰呀玫瑰」，原唱是姚莉，為1940年的電影「天涯歌女」的插曲。此歌後來翻唱成英文歌「Rose, Rose, I Love You」，為華語翻唱成英文歌的首例，在國外紅到後來，我們有些人還會誤以為這首歌原是英文歌，因為實在不相信中文歌曲能夠翻唱成英文歌，然後紅到可以在世界各地流傳，所以稱為世界名曲也不為過。

姚莉的唱腔在那時不算特別，不過跟現在的唱法比又差異頗大。

在台灣有不少歌星都翻唱過這首歌，各有各的韻味，然後也因為編曲與樂風的改編，讓人有不同歌曲的感覺。
